5 Powerful Yet Easy SEO Techniques to Boost Your Rankings
Search engine optimization (SEO) can seem overwhelming for beginners. With so many potential strategies and “best practices” out there, it’s hard to know where to start.
In this post, I’ll share 5 powerful yet easy-to-implement SEO techniques that deliver results:
- The merger technique
- Using AI for content ideas
- The reverse silo structure
- AI to create linkbait
- Fixing keyword cannibalization
Implementing these techniques can help your website get more traffic, leads and sales. Even better, these strategies don’t require advanced technical skills. Let’s dive in!
1. The Merger Technique for Higher Rankings
The merger technique involves acquiring an expired, relevant domain name and redirecting (or “merging”) it into your site. This passes on link equity and authority, making it easier to rank.
Here’s how to do it step-by-step:
Find Expired Domain Opportunities
Use a tool like Spamzilla to find relevant, expired domains that have good backlink profiles. Focus on domains marked as “available”, not auction domains.
Vet the Domain Thoroughly
Don’t just redirect any domain. Do due diligence to ensure it hasn’t been used for spam or low-quality SEO in the past.
- Check that the backlink profile is mostly editorial links, not artificial ones.
- Make sure the anchor text distribution is natural, not overly optimized.
- Review the domain’s history for any red flags.
- Confirm the domain is indexed in Google.
Acquire the Domain
Purchase the domain and get hosting so you have full control over the redirect implementation.
Set Up 301 Redirects
Redirect all individual pages/URLs on the old domain to relevant pages on your site on a one-to-one basis using 301 permanent redirects.
Be Patient
It can take 3-6 months to see the benefits. But executed correctly, this technique can significantly boost your rankings and authority.
2. Use AI to Identify Untapped SEO Opportunities
AI tools like ChatGPT make it easy to generate content ideas optimized for SEO. Here’s how:
Ask ChatGPT to analyze your site’s Google Search Console and identify keywords ranking poorly (e.g. below position 50).
These “long tail” keywords present prime SEO opportunities, as ranking content likely isn’t optimized for them. Create new, targeted content for these keywords to improve rankings.
The AI gives you data-driven ideas to create content people are searching for but you haven’t targeted yet. This content also tends to be easier to rank, resulting in more traffic.
3. Implement a Reverse Silo Link Building Structure
Traditional “silos” organize sites into topics and subtopics. A reverse silo does the opposite:
- Focus on building links to “pillar” pages optimized for keywords.
- Allow their authority to flow “down” to important pages like category and product pages.
For example, build links to a page on “candy statistics”. This raises domain authority overall, indirectly benefiting product and category pages.
With this structure, you build links strategically to pages optimized for it rather than trying to get links to every product description. Work smarter, not harder!
4. Use AI to Quickly Create Link Bait
Link bait refers to highly shareable content that attracts links, like tools, research reports and interactive content. But creating it from scratch is tough.
Instead, use ChatGPT to automatically generate link bait assets:
- Find examples of competitor link bait content.
- Ask ChatGPT to generate a similar HTML/CSS tool or asset.
- Implement the code on your site.
Now you have linkworthy content ready to promote! For example, I used this technique to create a customizable countdown timer tool that drives 500+ visitors and has earned 11 backlinks.
5. Eliminate Keyword Cannibalization
Keyword cannibalization refers to targeting multiple pages on the same keyword, splitting the potential traffic.
Identify cannibalization by:
- Monitoring search rankings for volatility.
- Checking if different URLs swap rankings for a keyword.
Then optimize your site architecture:
- Pick primary pages to target core keywords.
- Create new pages only for keywords with different searcher intent.
- Consolidate similar keywords under one URL.
Proper optimization ensures pages have clear, non-overlapping purposes. This results in more stable rankings.
